The short version

  • NordVPN Prime includes up to $1M identity theft insurance, up to $100K cyber extortion insurance, 1-bureau credit monitoring, and credit freeze help.
  • Nord's standalone identity service is now Coveron; nordprotect.com redirects there. Its plans list up to $2M in identity theft insurance.
  • Surfshark One+ includes up to $1M in identity recovery coverage for new US customers. Surfshark Alert breach monitoring comes with One and One+.
  • The identity insurance in all three is for US residents and excludes New York (Coveron and Surfshark say so directly).
  • A credit freeze at all three bureaus is free and blocks most new-account fraud. Do that first, with or without a bundle.

Nord and Surfshark both sell identity theft protection bundled with a VPN. NordVPN's Prime plan adds up to $1 million in identity theft insurance, cyber extortion insurance, credit monitoring, and credit freeze help. Nord Security's standalone identity product, Coveron (nordprotect.com now redirects to it), goes further with up to $2 million in coverage and 3-bureau monitoring on its top plan. Surfshark One+ adds up to $1 million in identity recovery coverage for new US customers.

All three are aimed at US residents. If you live elsewhere, the insurance doesn't apply, and you're mostly paying for breach monitoring and data removal.

NordVPN Prime

Prime is NordVPN's top tier. It includes everything in Complete (antivirus, password manager, cloud storage, Dark Web Monitor Pro) and adds, per Nord's pricing page:

  • Identity theft insurance up to $1,000,000
  • Cyber extortion insurance up to $100,000
  • Credit freeze assistance with TransUnion credit freeze guidelines
  • 1-bureau credit monitoring and a VantageScore 3.0 score from TransUnion

Nord's pricing page says it isn't a licensed insurance producer and that HSB Specialty Insurance Company issues the Master Policy. The Prime cards also reference Coveron identity protection, with additional terms.

Dark Web Monitor Pro watches up to 8 email addresses plus your phone number, card numbers, and national ID or Social Security number. Nord says phone monitoring is limited to numbers from selected countries. Bank transaction monitoring, which comes with Complete and Prime, works only with US bank accounts.

Price: $188.73 for the first 27 months on the 2-year plan ($6.99 a month), then $296.28 a year. Complete, without the identity extras, is $107.73 and renews at $219.48.

Coveron, Nord's standalone identity service

If you want identity protection first and a VPN second, Nord Security sells Coveron. Its site says it's "brought to you by Nord Security," and the old nordprotect.com address now redirects to coveron.com. Coveron's FAQ says it's available in the United States, and its identity benefits exclude New York residents.

Coveron's pricing page lists five plans. 2-year intro prices on October 29, 2026:

Coveron plan2-year intro priceWhat it adds
Scam Protection$4.99/mo ($119.76)Dark web monitoring, malware breach alerts, online fraud and cyberattack insurance
Identity Theft Protection$5.99/mo ($143.76)$2M identity theft insurance, 1-bureau credit monitoring, credit lock, home title insurance, recovery help
Full Protection$9.99/mo ($239.76)3-bureau monitoring, NordVPN, next-gen antivirus, Incogni, US bank transaction monitoring
Full Couple Protection$16.99/mo ($407.76)Full Protection for 2 adults and their children
Full Family Protection$26.99/mo ($647.76)Full Protection for up to 5 adults and children; insurance limit shared

One inconsistency to know about: Coveron's pricing page listed $100K in cyber extortion insurance on the Identity Theft Protection plan, while its homepage described a lower cyber extortion limit on the day we checked. Read the summary of benefits before you rely on any single number.

Coveron also says that reaching an identity restoration case manager requires filing a claim with HSB.

Surfshark One+

Surfshark's identity theft coverage comes only with One+, and only for new US customers. Surfshark's coverage page lists:

  • Up to $1M for identity recovery expenses
  • Covered costs including credit bureau reports, replacement documents, and legal fees
  • Lost wages up to $5,000 (including child and elder care), mental health counseling up to $1,000, and other related expenses up to $1,000
  • Access to a licensed identity theft investigator

Eligibility is new One+ customers residing in the US, including territories and DC. New York State residents are excluded. The insurer is HSB Specialty Insurance Company, and claims are filed through a link in your Surfshark account or a toll-free line.

One+ also includes Surfshark Alert, which monitors emails, card details, and IDs (Surfshark says it can scan IDs from more than 90 countries), and Incogni data removal, available to residents of the US, UK, EU, Switzerland, and Canada.

Price: $107.73 for the first 27 months ($3.99 a month). Surfshark's pricing page doesn't show the renewal price.

What identity theft insurance actually pays for

This is the part most ads skip. The insurance in these bundles is mainly expense reimbursement for recovering your identity, plus help from a specialist. Surfshark's list is typical: credit reports, replacing documents, legal costs, lost wages, and counseling.

Surfshark's coverage page doesn't describe reimbursing money stolen from your accounts. Coveron lists a separate online fraud insurance line, which may cover some direct losses; read its terms for specifics. In most cases, your bank and card issuer are your first line of recovery for fraudulent charges, not the VPN bundle.

Monitoring is the other half of the value. Credit monitoring tells you when a new account or inquiry shows up on your report, and dark web monitoring tells you when your email, card, or Social Security number appears in leaked data. Neither prevents theft on its own. They shorten the time between something going wrong and you finding out, which is when recovery is cheapest.

Single-bureau monitoring (Prime, and Coveron's mid plan) only watches one credit file. A thief who applies with a lender that checks a different bureau won't trigger it. That's one more reason to freeze all three.

Read the summary of benefits

Each provider links to a summary of benefits from HSB. Check deductibles, sub-limits, and what counts as an "identity theft event" before you buy. The headline $1M or $2M is a ceiling, not a payout.

What you can do for free

Much of what these bundles automate is free from official sources:

  • Credit freezes are free at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, and don't affect your score, according to the FTC. A freeze blocks most new-account fraud.
  • Fraud alerts are free and last one year; you contact one bureau and it notifies the other two.
  • Credit reports are free weekly at AnnualCreditReport.com, which the FTC calls the only authorized site.
  • Recovery plans are free at IdentityTheft.gov, the FTC's reporting site.
  • Breach checks are free at Have I Been Pwned.

What the bundles add is convenience, continuous monitoring, and the insurance itself. Our guide on whether security bundles are worth it looks at when paying for convenience makes sense.

If your identity is stolen while you're covered

The insurance only helps if you use it. Here's the general order of operations:

  1. Report it to the FTC. File at IdentityTheft.gov. You'll get a recovery plan and an identity theft report, which the FTC says you need for an extended fraud alert.
  2. Freeze or lock your credit. Do it at all three bureaus if you haven't. Prime and Coveron include credit freeze help or a credit lock; a freeze is free either way.
  3. Call your bank and card issuers. Dispute any fraudulent charges directly. That's usually faster than any insurance claim.
  4. Open a claim. Surfshark says One+ customers file through the claim link in their account or a toll-free number. Coveron says you reach a restoration case manager by filing a claim with HSB. Nord Prime customers should follow the claim instructions in their Nord account.
  5. Keep receipts and notes. Recovery coverage reimburses documented expenses, so log every call, fee, and hour of missed work.

Which to choose

You're outside the US: skip the identity tiers. NordVPN Complete or Surfshark One gives you breach monitoring without paying for insurance you can't use.

You're in New York: Surfshark and Coveron both exclude New York from identity benefits. Check NordVPN Prime's terms at checkout before buying for the insurance.

You want a VPN plus some ID coverage, cheaply: Surfshark One+ at $107.73 for 27 months is the lowest entry price, with Incogni included.

You want the strongest identity coverage: Coveron Full Protection adds 3-bureau monitoring and the higher $2M limit, and includes NordVPN.

You already use NordVPN: compare Prime's renewal ($296.28 a year) with Complete plus a free credit freeze. For many people, the freeze does most of the work. See our NordVPN vs Surfshark comparison for the broader picture.

Is NordProtect still available?

On October 29, 2026, nordprotect.com redirected to coveron.com, which describes itself as an identity protection service from Nord Security. Coveron's site doesn't explicitly say it replaced NordProtect, so treat the redirect as the best available signal.

Does Surfshark One+ identity theft coverage work outside the US?

No. Surfshark says coverage is for new One+ customers residing in the US, including territories and DC, and excludes New York State.

Who is the insurer behind these plans?

NordVPN, Coveron, and Surfshark all name HSB Specialty Insurance Company as the issuer of the Master Policy, and both NordVPN and Surfshark state they aren't licensed insurance producers.

Does a credit freeze replace identity theft insurance?

Not entirely. A freeze prevents most new credit accounts from being opened in your name, which stops a lot of fraud before it starts. Insurance helps pay recovery costs if something gets through, such as tax or medical identity theft.

Can I add identity theft protection to my existing NordVPN or Surfshark plan?

Upgrading tiers is the usual route. NordVPN's deals page says you can upgrade at any time. Surfshark's identity coverage applies to new One+ customers, so check eligibility before upgrading.
