Dedicated IP VPN: Who Actually Needs One (and Who Doesn't)
A fixed address only you use sounds like an upgrade. For many people it is a trade-off against privacy.
Dedicated IP sounds like a pure upgrade. It is a different trade-off. This guide explains shared and dedicated addresses, who benefits, who does not, and what NordVPN and Surfshark say about their own add-ons on their own pages, which we read in October 2026.
Shared IP versus dedicated IP
On a standard VPN plan you connect to a server and share its public IP address with many other customers. Websites see one address used by lots of people.
With a dedicated IP, the provider assigns you an address that is not shared. NordVPN describes it as "a unique address assigned exclusively to a single user, account, device, or website" that stays the same each time you connect, with the same encryption as shared addresses. Surfshark describes a unique IP for one account that does not change over time. Surfshark adds that "static" and "dedicated" are different ideas, although most dedicated IPs are static.
| Feature | Shared IP | Dedicated IP |
|---|---|---|
| Who uses the address | Many customers at once | Only you |
| Address stability | Can change between sessions or servers | Stays the same |
| Privacy in a crowd | Your activity blends with others | Your sessions are linkable to one address |
| Reputation risk | Other users' behavior can get the address flagged | Only your own behavior counts |
| Allowlisting | Impractical | Possible, because the address is yours |
| Cost | Included in the plan | Optional add-on at both providers we read |
What the providers say, as of October 2026
NordVPN. Its dedicated IP page calls it an optional add-on, and its pricing page lists it as an optional add-on to the Basic plan. Its support page says new customers can add it at checkout and existing ones can buy it from their Nord Account. After payment you choose the location in Nord Account, which the support page says can take up to three business days. An active NordVPN subscription is required, your email address is linked to the IP, and you can buy more than one, but you cannot exceed ten simultaneous connections overall. The features page says the same dedicated IP can be used on up to 10 devices with OpenVPN, but on only one device at a time with NordLynx, and it lists exceptions for some platforms and protocols. Platform support can change, so confirm yours on the live page. It states no NordVPN-specific price, so check the current price.
Surfshark. Its page calls it an add-on available on every Surfshark VPN plan, and you need a subscription first. It lists WireGuard, IKEv2 and OpenVPN, unlimited connections and several platforms, with configuration files for manual setup on devices such as smart TVs and consoles. Two limits stand out: you cannot change the location after purchase, and one subscription cannot hold multiple dedicated IPs. The page shows "From $3.75 /mo" with a 30-day money-back guarantee as read on 12 October 2026. It does not name the currency or billing term, so treat that as a starting point and check the current price. Its location list and its FAQ disagree on the number of locations, another reason to check the live list.
Surfshark is open about the privacy trade-off: because the IP is tied to details such as your email address, a dedicated IP may offer less privacy than a shared one. Neither page we read mentions port forwarding, so do not assume it.
Who actually needs one
- Remote workers and small teams with allowlists. If an employer, client or cloud service only accepts approved addresses, a fixed IP lets you connect from anywhere. Ask your IT team first. Our remote work VPN guide covers the broader picture.
- People hosting a service. A home server or game server needs a stable address. Confirm the plan supports inbound connections before you buy.
- People who keep hitting captchas or blocks. A clean address only you use can reduce challenges caused by other people's abuse, though nothing guarantees it.
- Some banking and payment logins. A consistent address can look less suspicious than a changing one, but banks differ. Start with our guide on why banks block VPN logins.
Who does not need one
- Anyone using a VPN mainly for privacy. A shared address is part of the protection, and a dedicated one makes your sessions easier to link over time. Our VPN myths guide covers what a VPN does and does not anonymize.
- Casual streamers and travelers. A dedicated address does not necessarily unblock anything.
- People on public Wi-Fi. The encryption is the same either way. See the public Wi-Fi guide.
- Torrent users. A fixed address ties your activity to one identifier, the opposite of what most people want.
Questions to ask before you pay
Because it is an add-on, the usual renewal games apply. Our guide to reading holiday VPN deals and renewal price breakdown show the pattern.
- How is it billed? NordVPN's support page we read did not say whether the add-on is billed separately and pointed to a separate renewal and cancellation article. Read it.
- What happens if you cancel? Ask whether you can get the same address back.
- Is your location available? Both providers publish limited location lists, and Surfshark does not let you change location after purchase.
- Does it work on every device you use, given the protocol and platform notes above?
- What does the provider know? The address is tied to your account. Read the no-logs policy.
Alternatives worth considering
A self-hosted VPN on a server with a fixed address you control needs technical skill and ongoing maintenance. A business plan from a provider is another route if several people need fixed addresses. Or ask the service whether it supports sign-in methods that do not depend on address allowlists.
Bottom line
Buy a dedicated IP only if you can name the exact problem it solves, then test it on that service before the refund window closes. Three questions help. Is there a specific system that must recognize my address? Have I actually been blocked on a shared address? Am I comfortable with my sessions being tied to one address? Three yes answers point to a dedicated IP. For general privacy, skip it.
